Nature of Work

This is cash processing and related clerical work. An employee in this class collects and records payments and issues receipts for monies collected from court clients. Duties also include preparing checks for disbursement. Work is performed in accordance with standard departmental regulations, procedures and practices which allow little opportunity for deviation. A higher-level cashier or designee supervises work.

                         Essential Functions: (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed)

  • Collects cash, check, or credit card payments from the public for traffic tickets, bail, fines, fees, costs, and monies owed to court clients; issues receipts for these collections and enters those amounts into the computer.
  • Checks case files to verify amounts owed and paid.
  • Prepares bank deposit documents and remits deposits to the appropriate banks.
  • Safeguards all monies collected, between the time it is collected and when it is deposited or placed in custody of the immediate supervisors.
  • Prepares daily, monthly, and other periodic summaries of collections for transmittal to appropriate personnel.
  • Prepares disbursements for approval by supervisor or higher-level administrator.
  • Examines individual accounts to isolate and prepare reports on overdue or delinquent bills, and to locate and reconcile posting errors.
  • Provides information to the public over the phone or in person.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

 

 

 

 

                                             Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Some knowledge of government regulations, practices, and procedures applicable to the collection and deposit of government revenues.
  • Some knowledge of financial procedures and related laws and regulations.
  • Ability to make accurate and rapid calculations.

     

  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and to create a helpful atmosphere.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and a computerized cash register.
  • Ability to operate a credit card machine and a ten-key adding machine.
  • Ability to keep records of cash received and to prepare a variety of routine reports on such transactions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Skilled in counting money and recording transactions accurately.

Physical Demands

Work is essentially sedentary with occasional walking, standing, bending, and transferring items up to 2 pounds such as papers and files. Positions may require periods of extended sitting, standing or computer use.

 

Working Conditions

 Moderate noise; cashier cage and business office setting.
